i dont think so mate

you nominate a player not to take a penalty so you are back to your more confident kickers as quick as the team with less men. your advantage is that you pick your weakest

there is no stipulation that the keeper has to be one (of the 10 penalty takers) if he intends to stand against the penalties

Robson 3:09 Wed Jan 14
Re: Refereeing question about tonight
If that's the case then I agree it is a bit flawed, but the advantage was still ours as we got to exclude our weakest outfield penalty taker.

Trevor B 3:06 Wed Jan 14
Re: Refereeing question about tonight
i thin the rule is that if both keepers remain then they have to both take pens.

Re: Refereeing question about tonight
he bottled the decision as wouldn't have remembered the rules

Robson 3:02 Wed Jan 14
Re: Refereeing question about tonight
Presumably we could have nominated Adrian to not take a penalty and still allowed him to 'take part' by being in goal though? In which case we did have the advantage as we were able to exclude our weakest penalty taker, whereas Everton weren't.

Re: Refereeing question about tonight
if tomkins had stepped up i reckon he would not have been as cool as adrian.

Re: Refereeing question about tonight
The rule (law) about the team with 11 having to nominate a player not to take a penalty is ridiculous.

We should have carried the advantage into penalties.

Still, ADDDDDDDRRRRRRIIIIIAAAAAAANNNNN!

Re: Refereeing question about tonight
i think the ref going to his cards was just a stern warning, to remind robles that he already had a card and would be off. ref also had words with adrian too but as he hadnt already been carded didnt need to make his point more as sternly.

Re: Refereeing question about tonight
He may also have thought that the massive delay caused by sending off the keeper and getting another one nominated, gloved up etc... would actually be negative for our player about to take a penalty so he didn't want to disadvantage us.

Re: Refereeing question about tonight
The Rules of the Game state:
"If the goalkeeper is sent off during the taking of kicks from the
penalty mark, he shall be replaced by a player who finished the
match"

They also say that if at the beginning of kicks from the penalty mark one side has more players on the pitch than the other, then the side with more players must select an appropriate number of players who will not take part. So presumably Tompkins was selected not to take a kick.

Re: Refereeing question about tonight
If he had sent off Robles during the shootout, someone like Jagielka would have saved the next penalty. It's football narrative and usually happens against us.

dr congo

a mate of mine is a keeper and also a massive statto, reckons a keeper was sent off in a african tournament once about ten years ago when he decided to clump another player during the shoot out.

The lino was dreadful, ball went out for 2 goal kicks that he did not give, as he was so far off the pace.I was in the he east stand by the away fans, christ he was poor.

Re: Refereeing question about tonight
The ref was a weak cunt. Neither penalty shout was even a free-kick but he bottled both by giving a free-kick outside the box.

He had booked their keeper already and taken a yellow card out of his pocket when he realised he would have to send him off and put it away.

Luckily, he failed to spoil a terrific game.

Re: Refereeing question about tonight
Hell of a precedent to set, you wouldn't want to be the first ref to do it. I can't remember any keeper ever being shown even a first yellow during a shootout.

Re: Refereeing question about tonight
I don't know if the handball was a foul. Borderline, but I'd be fucking annoyed if it was given against us.

The Tomkins one DEFINITELY wasn't, and wrongly, that fact was lost in the analysis.

jonthehammer 9:35 Wed Jan 14
Re: Refereeing question about tonight
Theirs wasnt even a foul let alone a penalty, total dive.

As for ours, was in the box and ive seen them given altho pretty harshly.

As for Robles, I think they would just have to nominate someone.

Sven Roeder 9:33 Wed Jan 14
Re: Refereeing question about tonight
Must agree that I thought all the whining about Mirallas being inside the area seemed to ignore any analysis of the fact that it wasn't a foul and he just launched himself.

Should be a better indication of what is a penalty for handball when someone is blocking a shot or cross. My thought is that it should be if the arms are in an unnatural position or a deliberate attempt is made to spread them to make a bigger target ie intent.
I thought ours passed those tests as his hands were raised higher and wider than he would just to balance himself.

Private Dancer 9:28 Wed Jan 14
Re: Refereeing question about tonight
To send a keep off in a penalty shoot out would be totally unprecedented and I doubt it has ever happened before, anywhere. Was never ever going to happen.
